"Nigeria: UNICEF to Provide Polio Vaccines for Six States at N96.1 Million" Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (02/25/03)
Vinod Alkar, assistant Nigerian representative for zone D, says UNICEF will provide 96.1 million naira to help six Nigerian states eradicate polio. The funds will be distributed to Kano, Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Jigawa, and Gombe. Nigeria recorded 170 confirmed polio cases in 2002, and it is working hard to reduce that number by participating in National Immunization Days. However, rumors that the vaccine is a government effort to control the birth rate and is only meant for people with HIV has affected participation in the country's polio immunization program.
