Infants from South Australia, Western Australia, and Victoria have been
recruited for the trial of a new vaccine against meningococcal disease.
Professor Don Roberton from the Adelaide Women's and Children's Hospital says
the vaccine is aimed at the C and Y strains of the disease and if successful
could eventually be used worldwide.
He says several hundred babies will be involved in the trial.
"The children will start and enrol in the trial at 6 to 12 weeks of age, and we
will immunise them at two months of age, four months of age, and six months," he
said.
"We'll see the children again at 12 months and at that stage we'll be checking
the memory of the immune response."
