In Hong Kong, respiratory infections caused by
the adenovirus virus increased from 25 cases in August to 84 cases in December,
and infections caused by the influenza B virus are up from just three cases in
August to 67 in December. The adenovirus and the influenza B virus are likely
to peak this spring, according to University of Hong Kong
associate professor of microbiology Patrick Woo Chiu-yat. He recommended that
people at high risk for infection, such as the elderly, should seek an influenza
vaccination.
