Crib death SBS, SIDS or Metabolic Disorder?: A screening test to differentiate them

Unexpected or unexplained deaths of infants are tragic. There is a trend for law enforcement, child protection agencies and the justice system to rush to judgment in these cases where any amount of suspicion is raised, thus further destroying an already grieving family. I describe a testing procedure for all interested persons to rule out metabolic disorders. Continued

In response to the recent PBS exposé about our nation's public welfare system,  child abuse / custody consultant expert witness Howard Fishman asserts that, with additional funding, we may be able to address several other critically important questions:
  1. Why are 600,000 children in state care?
  2. How many of those children could be safely returned to their parents with limited and relevant assistance?
  3. Why were the "helping" role and "policing" role of caseworkers -- which once were separate -- blended into a single job description that makes the job impossible?
  4. Why is there no active consideration of restoring the seemingly more rational structure?
  5. Why are due process rights largely ignored in child abuse cases?
  6. How has "junk science" permeated agency policies and procedures?
  7. Why do the courts allow such "junk science" to be brought into the courtroom in child abuse cases?
  8. Why do child protection caseworkers have greater immunity from lawsuits than (better trained) police officers?
  9. Why is the "official" literature almost devoid of any discussion related to the

    devastating emotional harms to children who are removed into state care?

  1. Why has the "reasonable efforts" mandate been unsuccessful? Is it because it has been largely ignored?
  2. Why are only-third of children placed with family members? Are we really to believe that kinship placement is not feasible in two-thirds of all cases?
  3. Are reintegration plans actually designed to facilitate return of children to their families or are they just "busy work" designed to further overwhelm parents of limited means and education?
  4. Most fundamentally, how can we justify the continued existence of this egregiously dysfunctional, ineffective and harmful system?
  5. Is it time to call -- a la Ivan Illich -- for "deprotecting" our children and their families?
  6. Can we do less than to demand fundamental and comprehensive reform?

In too many cases of sudden infant death, parents are brutalized by inadequate medical and justice systems before even having an opportunity to grieve for their profound loss.
