General Health: In Safe Hands --
Medical Mistakes and Patient Safety
According to a 1999 study by
the Institute of Medicine, as many as 98,000 people die each
year from medical errors, and many others are injured, as
well. Medical sociologist from the University of Michigan,
Marilynn Rosenthal, Ph.D., points out that not all bad
outcomes are due to negligence. Still, negligent events
happen and people get hurt. While the study has drawn
attention and concern to the area of medical mistakes, it
has also forced hospitals to take a closer look at their
system and what can be done to improve patient safety. In
this area, many advances have been made that have saved
lives.
Do you have a
story to share about a treatment you feel was negligent, or
a story about a hospital where you've seen improvements? We
would like your questions, opinions, and personal
experiences related to patient safety. Most
recent postings are at the top.
