"Gates Group Boosts Vaccine Programs"
Seattle Post-Intelligencer (www.seattlep-I.com) (02/11/03) P. A2
The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization has expanded its mission by putting more funding behind the research and development of vaccines that are critical to Third World nations. The alliance presented Johns Hopkins with $30 million to support its development of a pneumococcal vaccine, and $30 million was given to Seattle's Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH) to support their development of a rotavirus vaccine. At least 1.5 million deaths in Third World nations can be attributed to those two diseases, according to PATH's Dr. Julie Jacobson.
