INTERNATIONAL IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"China Sees Decline in Incidence of Infectious Disease"
Xinhua News Agency (202.84.17.11/en/main.htm) (02/24/03)
The Chinese Ministry of Health reported a 5.74 percent drop in the number of reported infectious diseases between 2001 and 2002. However, the country is dealing with a rise in the number of HIV/AIDS cases and reports that diseases transmitted through blood and sexual contact are more common than those transmitted through intestinal and respiratory tracts and by insects. China recorded no polio cases in 2002, suggesting that its ongoing efforts to eradicate the disease via expanded immunization programs for children have been successful.
