In conjunction with
The Scottish Parliament Cross Party Group on Autistic Spectrum Disorders
Present a seminar on the 14th March 5-7pm
The Biomedical Aspects of Autism
Dr Ken Aitken (Independent Consultant Child Clinical Neuropsychologist)
“The epidemiology of Autistic Spectrum Disorders” – How common is ASD and is it really on the increase? If so what are the financial and resource implications? Dr Aitken will also give a brief introduction to recent ideas in the biomedical area of autism research including those identified by the Medical Research Council.
Dr John March (Moredun Research Institute)
“Gluten and casein free diets in the treatment of Autistic Spectrum Disorders” - A common intervention for the treatment of autism in children is the use of 'restricted' diets. Why are these diets successful in some cases and not in others? Dr March will describe his team's latest research findings, conducted using state-of-the-art equipment which can help to identify which children may benefit from interventions such as casein and gluten free diets.
Dr Gordon Bell (Stirling University)
“Toxic elements in children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders” – Recent research carried out using hair samples from a group of children (some who have ASD and some who haven’t) suggested that children with ASD may have problems connected with toxic metals. Dr Bell will talk about his results and why this particular area of research requires further investigation.
The seminar will take place in Committee Room 1 at the Scottish Parliament, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh. To book a place, phone Liane Cumming or Amanda Gordon on 0131-348 5739 , Email Liane.Cumming@scottish.parliament.uk or Amanda.Gordon@scottish.parliament.uk.
