"AIDS Vaccine in 10 Years--Expert"
Irish Times (www.ireland.com) (02/08/03) P. 6; Donnellan, Eithne
Dr. Seth Berkeley, head of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), said Friday that he was confident that an effective AIDS vaccine would be discovered within a decade, as long as the effort to move forward in research and development continues. IAVI--a nonprofit organization established in 1996 to promote and speed up the development of an AIDS vaccine--continues to lobby governments to entice private drug makers to develop a vaccine as well, particularly for use in poor countries whose populations cannot afford treatments. Development of IAVI's VaxGen began 15 years ago and is the first AIDS vaccine to reach the human testing stage.
