Africa News Service (www.allafrica.com) (04/29/03)

Speakers at an Ethiopian conference for World Heath Day presented staggering statistics on the state of children's health in Africa and, more specifically, in Ethiopia.  Statistics show that 20 percent of African children die before five years of age.  The head of the World Health Organization in Ethiopia, Angela Benson, noted that measles, acute respiratory infection, diarrhea, malaria, HIV, and malnutrition were responsible for 70 percent of childhood deaths in Africa.  In Ethiopia, said the country's deputy health minister, Dr. Demissie Tadesse, many people do not have access to clean water or safe sanitation, and many people have not received vaccines.
