U.S. IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"West Nile Surveillance Begins"
Wyoming Tribune-Eagle (www.wyomingnews.com) (04/24/03); Fashekrep, Allison
At a cost of about $5,000 per week, the Cheyenne, Wyo., City-County Health Department and the city's Weed and Pest Department began a surveillance, abatement, and educational campaign related to mosquitoes, which potentially carry and spread the West Nile virus. The illness has no vaccine or treatment and is usually only a serious threaten to the weak and elderly. The campaign involves four employees who survey areas of water and then treat the water with the bacterial larva killer BTI, according to City-County Health Department director of environmental health Gary Hickman. The city is also preparing for likely cases of West Nile Virus by preparing for insecticide sprays by plane and encouraging citizens to remove old tires and other water-holding junk as well as wear long-sleeved clothing from dusk to dawn.
