"WHO Demands Bigger Effort Against Malaria"
Reuters (www.reuters.com) (04/25/03); Lovell, Jeremy
World Health Organization (WHO) Chief Gro Harlem Brundtland asserts that the five-year-old Roll Back Malaria Initiative must be strengthened to ensure that Africans are provided with treatments of and preventions against malaria; the report was published to coincide with Africa Malaria Day. With 3,000 African children dying each day as a result of malaria, the initiative needs to be more effective, Brundtland says. Treatments should involve a cocktail of drugs, but significantly more funding is needed to provide such expensive drugs to the poor countries in Africa. In the meantime, researchers are working on a malaria vaccine that will not enter the market for at least 10 years.
