India, one of seven countries still dealing with polio infections, experienced a polio outbreak in 2002 that attributed to the fourfold increase in the worldwide number of cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  The epidemic was likely caused by a reduction in polio immunizations in India, according to the CDC, which is promoting worldwide polio vaccinations to eliminate the disease from the planet altogether by 2005.  Earlier this month, India launched a polio vaccination campaign focused on vaccinating about 80 million children against polio with a number of follow-up vaccinations campaigns already scheduled.
