"CDC Asks Firms to Work on Vaccine for SARS"
New York Newsday (www.newsday.com) (04/22/03) P. A35
Merck, Vical, Avant, GlaxoSmithKline, and PowderJect Pharmaceuticals are among the companies that have been asked by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to work on a vaccine for severe acute respiratory syndrome. The agency has yet to offer specific financial help for the endeavor. Avant CEO Una Ryan says that the government wants the companies to use an approach of growing the virus, killing it, and then delivering the dead virus by injection to a patient. Vijay Samant, CEO of Vical, says that bringing a vaccine to clinical trials could take at least two years.
