Doctor accused of botching surgery
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

For the second time in four years, a Hernando County doctor is facing charges that he operated on a patient's healthy leg.

Dr. Imad Tarabishy is accused of operating on Betty Weier's right leg when he should have been repairing the ruptured Achilles tendon in her left leg, according to a lawsuit filed last week in Hernando County Circuit Court.

Tarabishy made the incision into the wrong leg, noticed nothing wrong, and was then informed of the mistake by a nurse. He stitched up the right leg, then performed surgery on the other, according to the postoperative report.

Weier's attorney, John Leighton of Miami, said Tarabishy did not inform his client about his 1999 surgery when he operated on a man's healthy knee.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.

Tarabishy declined to comment.
