New plea to help Nasreen

ONLY BD900 has been raised to help a 25-year-old epileptic girl - six months after the first appeal. The parents of Bahraini Nasreen Ghuloom Abbas Mohammed are hoping that more will be raised to enable their daughter to get the potentially life-changing treatment in Germany.

They need about BD8,000 to send Nasreen and her mother, Fatima Ebrahim Karam, to Dr Muhammed Refai's clinic in Hürth.

Nasreen became epileptic at just three-months-old after reacting badly to routine vaccinations.

Soon afterwards, she developed cerebral palsy because of the disruption to her brain development.

She has never learned to talk and became too weak to walk two years ago. She is now confined to a wheel-chair. Nasreen suffers at least eight epileptic seizures a week, most of which are strong enough to make her lose consciousness. Her condition is deteriorating, despite the medication she takes to control the seizures, says her mother.

"I used to work as a nurse for three years, and before that worked as a secretary for 24 years, but because Nasreen's condition has deteriorated I quit my job and decided to take care of her at home," Mrs Karam told the GDN yesterday.

Mrs Karam's husband, Ghuloom Abbas, is an employee at Alba.

"Doctors in Bahrain say that they can do nothing more for Nasreen other than give her medicine to control her seizures, but I don't believe them," said Mrs Karam.

"Dr Refai's energetic treatment is said to have an 80 per cent success rate and he came to Bahrain to evaluate Nasreen last year."

Although Dr Refai did not give the family any guarantee that Nasreen will be cured, he remained hopeful that he could treat her successfully.

Mrs Karam has been searching for a cure for years and discovered Dr Refai on the Internet.

"A friend of mine has a daughter with the same problem as Nasreen and they went to Dr Refai's clinic in Germany for the treatment," she said.

"Now her daughter doesn't get any more epileptic seizures.

"I would like the same for Nasreen, if only someone can help us."

The energetic therapy will take at least two months and the BD8,000 will cover Nasreen and her mother's accommodation as well.

Mrs Karam was hoping to raise enough funds to be able to go to Germany by this summer.

"With just BD900, it is impossible to go at this time," she said.

The couple have three other children, Nasser, 22, Ali, 19, and Hussain, 16. The family live in Jurdab.

To make a donation contact Mrs Karam on 9440053, or pay it directly to her Standard Chartered Bank account number 018 5316 63401.
