"Cutting-Edge Biotech in Old-World Cuba"

Christian Science Monitor (www.csmonitor.com) (04/17/03) P. 14; Yee, Chen May

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) formed a marketing agreement with Cuba's Finlay Institute to market Finlay's meningitis B vaccine, and clinical trials of the vaccine are currently underway in Europe and Latin America, with trials planned for the United States as well.  Cuba hopes the deal will not only raise the institute's profits but also form one of the first bridges between the communist country and the capitalist world.  Although Cuba's pharmaceutical industry, which dealt with an embargo by making its own generic drugs, received 24 patents from the United States, it is banned from selling its drugs there.
