"Vaccine Gives New Hope to Asthma Sufferers"
Press Association (UK) (www.pressassociation.press.net) (04/14/03); Linden, Martha
Research on a vaccine tested on cat-allergy-related asthma showed a 50 percent reduction in reactions. Researchers are now working to make the vaccine effective for people whose asthma is triggered by other allergies. The peptide vaccine--which could be available within five years--desensitizes the immune system to the allergen; patients get tiny doses of allergens to stimulate a minor immune reaction. The research will be presented at the Royal Society of Medicine in London on Tuesday.
