INTERNATIONAL IMMUNIZATION NEWS
"Cuba Studying Effective Vaccines Against AIDS"
Xinhua News Agency (202.84.17.11/en/main.htm) (04/11/03)
Speaking recently at the Second Latin American and Caribbean Forum on HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Cuban researchers said they have developed two kinds of AIDS vaccines. Carlos Duarte, the head of the AIDS Department of the Havana Center of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, explained that vaccines--which consist of one preventive dose and one therapeutic dose--help to build up an immune response in the recipient. Duarte noted, however, that several more years of research is needed before the vaccines could become available.
