Sick Chickens To Get Flu Shots
By ANDRE BOWSER The U.S. Department of Agriculture (news - web sites) has approved a state plan to vaccinate more than 3 million sick chickens at Connecticut's largest egg producer. The unorthodox procedure will be used to fight a strain of avian influenza at Kofkoff Egg Farms'flocks in Bozrah and Lebanon. Kofkoff Egg Farms, which also has facilities that were unaffected in Franklin, Colchester and Hebron, referred all calls to the state Department of Agriculture. It notified the state of the outbreak on Feb. 27. Although a lot is riding on the plan, Bruce Gresczyk, acting commissioner of the state Department of Agriculture, said Friday that it was unclear when the vaccinations would begin. "We're working out the details, hopefully in two or three weeks it will be in process," Gresczyk said.
