"University of Arizona to Conduct
Cervical Cancer Vaccine Tests Funded by Merck" Arizona Daily Star (www.azstarnet.com)
(04/01/03); Swedlund, Eric
A University of Washington phase I study
of Merck's cervical cancer vaccine demonstrated that is was 100 percent
effective in preventing the disease by stopping human papillomavirus infection.
A larger phase II test will now take place across three continents. The
upcoming trial will also gauge whether the vaccine can prevent pre-cancerous
cervical lesions. A quadrivalent vaccine will be utilized in that study, as
opposed to the univalent version used in the phase I test.
