"Smallpox Shots Cost About $249 Each"
USA Today (www.usatoday.com) (04/02/03) P. 9D
The Association of State and Territorial Health Officials warns that unless states receive additional federal funding to fight smallpox, resources will be taken from other public health programs. It costs about $249 to vaccinate each medical and emergency worker against smallpox, according to a new study based on reports from 22 state health departments. That cost estimate for the vaccine includes staff training, operating costs for the vaccination program, and follow-up.
