Vaccine hope on asthma

A VACCINE to protect children against tuberculosis may prevent asthma, researchers have found.

Sydney scientists have discovered that children with a family history of allergies who received the BCG vaccine in infancy were protected.

BCG is used extensively in countries with a high rate of tuberculosis but has not been widely used in Australia.

The study, published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, found children who had been vaccinated had a significantly lower prevalence of asthma.

Dr Guy Marks, head of epidemiology at the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, said further research was needed.
